6 August 2003, 11:03  Germans pessimistic about economic pick-up

BERLIN, Aug 6 - A higher number of Germans are more pessimistic than optimistic about the chances of economic improvement after over two years of stagnation, a new opinion poll showed on Wednesday. According to the poll published by Stern magazine, 42 percent of respondents believed Europe's largest economy would tend to deteriorate further, against only 30 percent who thought it would improve. A further 24 percent of the 2,508 people asked by the Forsa research institute from July 28 to August 1 believed there would be no change. Four percent of respondents had no view.
