11 August 2003, 16:09  UK growth to remain weak: BCC

UK economic growth will be weaker than estimated for 2003 and will be likely to disappoint next year, according to the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC). UK GDP growth is likely to slow further in 2003 for the third successive year of below-trend expansion as measured against forecasts by the UK Treasury , the Chamber said in its quarterly economic survey released today. The BCC forecasts that in annual average terms, UK GDP will grow by 1.7pc in 2003, before registering a modest improvement in 2004 to 2.3pc. The Treasury is currently estimating trend growth of between 2pc and 2.50pc in 2003 and between 3pc and 3.5pc for 2004. Today's report said that the global background "will remain difficult, with particularly sluggish growth in the eurozone area". The report also said that while a global recession will be avoided, 2003 growth in the major economies will be low and in most cases weaker than in 2002. //www.fxcentre.com
