3 July 2003, 16:28  Eurozone retail sales rise 1.5pc in April

Retail sales in the Eurozone rose during April reflecting increases in consumer confidence registered since February. Eurozone retail sales in April rose 1.5pc from March, and were 2.2pc higher from a year earlier, according to the EU's statistics office, Eurostat. On the month, sales of food, drinks and tobacco were up 1.2pc in April, while other product sales rose 0.6pc. Year-on-year, food, drink and tobacco sales were 2.5pc higher, while sales of non-food products rose 0.6pc. The European Commission reported that consumer confidence in the eurozone for the month of April improved to minus 19 from minus 21 in March and minus 22 in February.
