6 May 2003, 16:50  Eurozone unemployment jumps in March

Eurozone unemployment rose to 8.7pc in March of this year from 8.6pc in February, according to the EU's statistics office Eurostat. In the EU as a whole, unemployment reached 7.9pc in March, unchanged from February but higher than the year-earlier level of 7.5pc. The lowest rates were registered in Luxembourg (3.4pc), the Netherlands (3.6pc), Austria (4.3pc), Ireland (4.5pc), and Denmark (5.0pc). Spain's rate of 11.5pc remained the EU's highest, followed by Finland (9.1pc) and France (9.1pc). Germany posted 8.9pc. Meanwhile, Eurozone producer prices (PPI), a key measure of inflation at the wholesale level, rose again in March. The PPI rose 0.2pc in March compared to the previous month and was up 2.4pc year-on-year, EU statistics office Eurostat said today. Economists had forecast a month-on-month rise of 0.3pc and a year-on-year rise of 2.5pc.
