6 May 2003, 12:47  UK Apr services index rises to 50.7

LONDON, May 6 - Following is a selection of economists' reactions on the CIPS/ UK services index for April, which rose more than expected to 50.7, showing renewed expansion in the sector.
PHILIP SHAW, CHIEF ECONOMIST AT INVESTEC
"The results are encouraging, but the absolute level remains very subdued. The direction, however, offers some crumbs of comfort and we'll need to see some further improvement in the months to come.
