4 April 2003, 12:46  Shiokawa Wants BOJ to Diversify Liquidity Means

TOKYO, April 4 - Japanese Finance Minister Masajuro Shiokawa said on Friday he wanted the Bank of Japan to diversify its means of providing more liquidity to the markets. He also said it would be better to rely less on government bonds and utilise securities such as commercial paper. Asked if the ministry had any requests ahead of a BOJ policy-setting meeting next week, Shiokawa told a news conference: "I would like them to consider diversifying their ways to expand liquidity." Shiokawa also said he saw no need for the Group of Seven (G7) finance ministers to discuss currencies at an upcoming meeting, unless the market became volatile. He added that he expected the G7 to discuss the impact of the war in Iraq on their economies but said that funding to reconstruct Iraq would not likely be raised as a topic. Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has said Japan must come up with funds if needed to help rebuild Iraq after the war.//
