4 April 2003, 09:19  Japan Feb Overall Household Spending Down 1.0% y/y

TOKYO, April 4 - Overall household spending in Japan fell 1.0 percent in February from a year earlier in real terms, the government said on Friday. The average household spent 271,326 yen ($2,273) during the month, the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications said. In nominal terms, overall household spending was down 1.3 percent. On a seasonally adjusted basis, spending fell a real 2.4 percent from January.
Data announced late last month showed that average spending by wage earners' households, another key gauge of personal consumption, fell a real 1.6 percent in February from a year earlier. The following table shows year-on-year percentage changes in spending, in real and nominal terms, for January and February.///
