30 April 2003, 10:28  BOJ's Fukui says easing due to econ uncertainty

TOKYO, April 30 - Bank of Japan Governor Toshihiko Fukui said on Wednesday that the central bank's decision to ease monetary policy was due to uncertainty over the outlook for the global economy and Japan's financial markets. "There is not much change in current economic conditions, but we acted in reaction to future uncertainties," he told a news conference. He said uncertainties remained over the European and U.S. economies and that the SARS virus could have an impact on Asian economies. He also said the bank was still studying effective policy tools and wanted to make a decision soon on whether to buy asset-backed commercial paper in its market operations.//
