3 April 2003, 14:32  German Mar jobless worse than expected

A further sign that the eurozone's largest economy is heading towards recession emerged this morning, with reports that the number of jobless in Germany in March rose a seasonally adjusted 52,000 from February. The rise was worse than expected, with economists forecasting an increase of 40,000 in March. In west Germany the number of jobless rose a seasonally adjusted 41,000, while in the east it rose 11,000. The unadjusted jobless total in March was 4.607 million, down 98,326 from February and up 451,869 from March last year, sources at the Labour Office said. The unadjusted jobless rate in March was 11.1pc, they said. The Labour Office is due to release official figures at 10.00 am CET, followed by seasonally adjusted jobless totals and rates from the Bundesbank. ///www.fxcentre.com
