25 April 2003, 09:35  Japan consumer confidence down in March

TOKYO, April 25 - Japanese consumer confidence worsened in the three months to March due to harsher job conditions and a weaker outlook on incomes, a government survey showed on Friday. The Cabinet Office said its quarterly survey of 5,040 households showed that the consumer sentiment index fell 2.0 points to 36.1 on a seasonally adjusted basis from December. The survey was taken on March 15. But private consumption, which accounts for more than half of Japan's gross domestic product (GDP), has remained surprisingly resilient, posting growth of one percent for the three months to December. Preliminary January-March GDP figures are due out on May 16.//
