15 April 2003, 11:02  French Feb industry output rises

PARIS, April 15 - Following are economists' reactions to data issued on Tuesday by national statistics office INSEE showing industrial output rose 0.6 percent month-on-month in February. LAURE MAILLARD, ECONOMIST, CAISSE DES DEPOTS "It is much better than expected. If we look at it compared with the fall in consumer confidence, it shows production is resisting. Even if it is not definitive and we need to wait for other numbers, it suggests that the fall in consumer confidence was more psychological and the demand is there after all. "What surprises me is the rise in energy production. It rose a lot in January, but then January was a cold month, and the same can't really be said for February. "Industrial production makes up around 25 percent of gross domestic product, so we should have a positive GDP reading for the first quarter."//
