18 March 2003, 10:46  Bush gives Saddam 48-hour ultimatum

US president George Bush has given Saddam Hussein a 48-hour ultimatum to leave Iraq before the US begins military strikes against the Gulf State. "Saddam Hussein and his sons must leave Iraq within 48 hours. Their refusal to do so will result in military conflict, commenced at a time of our choosing," Bush said in a televised address overnight. He advised all weapons inspectors and journalists to leave Iraq "for their own safety".
The US has also raised the national threat level to Orange, its second highest level. "The Intelligence Community believes that terrorists will attempt multiple attacks against US and coalition targets worldwide" if the US attacks Iraq, in the event of a US led military campaign against Saddam Hussein," the Department of Homeland Security said. The US president added that events in Iraq "have now reached the final days of decision. It is too late for Saddam Hussein to remain in power". France has reacted angrily to the news, with president Jacques Chirac saying that the world does not back America's stance and that only the UN has the right to justify force against Iraq. //www.fxcentre.com/
