21 January 2003, 11:40  EU to widen airport subsidy probe

The European Commission has said that it is to widen its investigation into the subsidies and incentives airports offer airlines to use them. The investigation follows a number of complaints about the subsidies and incentives Ryanair receives at Charleroi, near Brussels. Citing EU officials, the Irish Independent says that the investigation will include a number of new consultancy studies which will take in a number of other EU regional airports that offer incentives to airlines to use them. Because some regional airports receive a mixture of state, EU and private funding, the European Commission beleives it needs to widen this investigation to see how regional airports operate and to see precisely if there is a level playing field. ///www.fxcentre.com
