3 December 2002, 17:40  Eurozone jobless rises to 8.4pc in Oct

Unemployment in the eurozone rose in October for the first time in six months, EU statistics office Eurostat reported today. According to the office, the jobless rate rose to 8.4pc from 8.3pc in September, having remained steady since April. Analysts had expected an unchanged reading for the month. The unemployment rate was 8.0pc in October 2001. The rate also rose in the EU as whole in October, edging up to 7.7pc from 7.6pc in September.
Ireland's unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.4pc in October from September, but it was up from 4.0pc last year. This was still the fourth lowest rate, with Germany at 8.3pc, France at 8.8pc and Spain with a jobless rate of 11.7pc, the highest in the eurozone. In a separate release, Eurostat reported that eurozone producer prices rose by 0.2pc in October from September and were up 0.9pc year-on-year. The increase was in line with expectations. The only rise in prices was for energy goods, which saw a rise of 0.9pc month-on-month.// www.fxcentre.com
