13 November 2002, 16:02  Sept non-EU trade surplus but exports falling

Ireland had a seasonally adjusted trade surplus with non-EU countries of E947m in September, an increase of 12.2pc on August, according to figures released today by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) Exports in September came in at E2.385bn, while imports were E1.439bn. The increased surplus in September was due to a fall in both exports - from E2.55bn, and imports - from E1.712bn
Unadjusted exports were valued at E2.665bn in September 2002, 12pc lower on the year, while imports were valued at E1.409bn, 5pc higher than last year Comparing January-September 2002 with the corresponding period in 2001 shows exports fell 3pc to E25.455m, while imports were down 7pc to E14.378bn Exports of electrical machinery decreased 30pc to E2.425bn and exports of organic chemicals were down 5pc at E7.660bn. On the upside, exports of medical and pharmaceutical products jumped 62pc to E2.794bn
On a geographic basis, exports to Japan fell 18pc to E2.032bn and exports to the Philippines decreased 55pc to E291m. Exports to Saudi Arabia soared 265pc to E1.126bn, while exports to Switzerland rose 16pc to E2.534bn //www.fxcentre.com
