12 September 2002, 09:00  Stocks open lower, dollar higher against yen

/www.fxserver.com/ TOKYO (AP) -- Stocks opened lower in Tokyo Thursday, following Wall Street's fall. The dollar gained ground against the yen.
The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 40.95 points, or 0.44 percent, at 9,359.13 points at the Thursday open. The Nikkei ended up 90.77 points, or 0.98 percent, at 9,400.08 Wednesday.
Traders said that stocks in Tokyo are likely to change little in Thursday trading due to light trading in the United States, and a lack of new incentives in Japan.
The U.S. dollar was trading at 120.18 yen on the Tokyo foreign exchange market at 9 a.m. Thursday, up 0.44 yen from late Wednesday, but below the late New York trading level of 120.40 yen.
In New York, stocks fell in subdued trading on the first anniversary of the terror attacks Wednesday.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 21.44 points, or 0.30 percent, to 8,581.17, after rising as much as 124 points earlier. The broader Nasdaq composite index fell 4.64 points, or 0.40 percent, to 1,315.45, retreating from a 27-point gain in intraday trading.
The broader Tokyo Stock Price Index opened down 2.08 points, or 0.23 percent, at 915.02 Thursday. The TOPIX closed up 4.49 points, or 0.49 percent, at 917.10 Wednesday.
The euro traded at 117.34 yen Thursday morning, up from 116.96 yen late Wednesday in Tokyo. Against the dollar, the euro was quoted at 97.63 cents, unchanged from Wednesday.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year government bond was 1.0550 percent early Thursday, up from 1.0450 percent late Wednesday. Its price dropped 0.09 to 102.21.
