5 June 2002, 15:30 UK Retail Sales Growth Slows Sharply In May
Retail sales growth slowed sharply in May, but is expected to accelerate in June, the
CBI's latest distributive trades report showed Wednesday. The balance of
reported sales fell to +25% in May from +57% in April, the lowest
reading since October 2001. The CBI said that annual retail sales growth
had reverted back to the trend reported in January, suggesting that a
slowdown in spending is starting to take effect.
