MONTREAL (AFX) - Bank of England governor Eddie George said the UK is working in a "most constructive productive way, of moving towards sustainable convergence" with the euro zone. George said the government has been working in parallel with European countries to pursue the same kind of policies to achieve this. He was speaking on a panel of seven central bankers including Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan and ECB president Wim Duisenberg, at the International Monetary Conference here. George praised the ECB's policies and agreed with earlier comments from Wim Duisenberg about the success of the euro in bringing monetary stability to the zone. He said the criticisms have been "asking more than it could possibly deliver," notably exchange rate stability with other currencies as well as stability within the Euro zone. He said he would not attempt to prejudge the outcome of the result of applying the British government five tests to gauge whether the country is ready for entry to the euro zone which he said will be applied sometime before the middle of next year. He said if the government concludes that those tests are passed there will then be a recommendation to go ahead with a referendum six or nine months after that decision had been taken. "But it's - if if if - still I'm afraid at this stage, but we'll certainly know more within the next twelve months," he said.
