10 June 2002, 08:47  Japan May M2+CDs up 3.5 pct yr-on-yr vs rise 3.6 pct in April

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Money supply in May as measured by M2+CDs rose 3.5 pct year-on-year after rising 3.6 pct in April, the Bank of Japan said. Private-sector economists earlier predicted a rise in M2+CDs of between 3.3 and 3.7 pct, with a consensus of around 3.6 pct.
The central bank provided the following May year-on-year money supply details, compared with the previous month, including initial estimates:
Near money - down 13.6 pct vs down 12.8 pct
Certificates of deposit - down 28.0 pct vs down revised 38.1 pct
Provisional April estimate - up 37.7 pct
M1 - up 31.9 pct vs up 32.6 pct
