TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda said the government will increase efforts to accelerate banks' disposal of bad loans, even after the completion of the special inspection into banks by the regulator. "The government will continue our efforts to dispose of bank bad loans, even though the Financial Service Agency has completed its inspection," Fukuda told a regular press briefing. "Prime Minister (Junichiro) Koizumi gave an instruction yesterday to (financial affairs minister Hakuo) Yanagisawa that the government should accelerate even further disposal of bad loans," he added. "The government will strengthen bank inspections and, if necessary, take appropriate action," he said. Asked whether the result of the probe will likely accelerate disposals, Fukuda said: "I cannot comment on that yet as we do not know the result of the inspection. If the bad loans are small, there is no need to add to disposals."
