30 April 2002, 10:34 Bundesbank's Welteke says UK should join euro
LONDON (AFX) - Bundesbank president Ernst Welteke called on the UK
to join the euro, arguing it has much to gain.
Speaking on BBC Radio Four, Welteke said: "The advantages of
joining are more on the side of the UK than on the side of the euro
zone."
He suggested the British public will look more favourably on euro
entry after their summer holidays, during which people will experience
firsthand the convenience of the single currency.
He said the European Central Bank's monetary policy has gained
credibility.
Welteke's comments follow yesterday's call by European Commission
president Romano Prodi for the UK to join the euro.
