28 March 2002, 12:10   US 2002 GDP seen up 2.2 pct vs 1.4 pct in previous forecast - IMF draft

MILAN (AFX) - The IMF has increased its forecast for US GDP growth this year to 2.2 pct from a previous forecast of 1.4 pct, the Italian news agency ANSA said, citing a draft of the fund's World Economic Outlook. However, the US growth forecast for 2003 has been revised down to 3.4 pct from 3.8 pct, it said. In the euro-zone GDP is expected to rise 1.2 pct this year in line with the IMF's previous forecast, while the GDP growth forecast for 2003 was increased to 2.9 pct from 2.8 pct. The IMF expects world GDP to increase 2.7 pct in 2002 compared with a previous forecast of 2.5 pct. In 2003, world GDP growth is expected to reach 4.1 pct compared with a previous forecast of 4.2 pct, ANSA said.
