22 March 2002, 12:08  John Lewis week to March 16 dept store sales up 3.1 pct, food up 6.1 pct

LONDON (AFX) - John Lewis Partnership said in the week to March 16 sales at its department stores increased 3.1 pct compared to last year, while sales at its Waitrose food retail chain were up 6.1 pct. Total sales increased 4.6 pct. In the seven weeks to March 16, department store sales were up 7.5 pct, Waitrose sales were up 5.5 pct and total sales increased 6.5 pct. John Lewis' estimate of department store sales for the half-year as a whole is an increase of 9.0 pct on 2001-02, with Waitrose sales up 3.0 pct and total sales up 6.0 pct. "Week seven provided a lean harvest for department stores. It was always likely to be a testing week with Mother's Day behind us rather than just ahead of us, as it was last year," said Andy Street, supply chain director (department stores). "As a result, we missed the gift buying. Nevertheless, the sluggish business, particularly in furnishings, was below expectations." Tony Solomons, personnel director, (Waitrose) said the week's main features were a flurry of sales of flowers and gifts on Mothering Sunday (March 10), increased demand for Easter eggs and the continuing success of the current wines promotion.
