LONDON (AFX) - There was a public sector net cash repayment of 2.368 bln stg in February, compared with a repayment of 12.087 bln the month before, according to provisional data released by National Statistics. The AFX News median of analysts' forecasts was for a February repayment of 1.3 bln stg. In January last year there was a net cash repayment of 16.359 bln stg. In his Nov 27 pre-budget report, Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown forecast a PSNB surplus of 2.5 bln stg for the fiscal year to March 2002, which compares with an 18.2 bln stg surplus recorded in the fiscal year to March 2001. Public sector net borrowing -- the government's preferred measure of the public sector's financial position -- stood at 687 mln stg in February, compared with -8.399 bln in January and -12.475 mln in the same month a year earlier. Public sector net debt outstanding at the end of February amounted to 303.3 bln stg, equivalent to 30.0 pct of GDP. A breakdown of the data revealed that total cash receipts in February were at 28.9 bln stg, unchanged from the same month the year before. Cash outlays were at 27.3 bln stg, representing a 1.6 pct rise from the 26.9 bln stg level in February last year.
