14 March 2002, 12:17 BoJ's Hayami - Does not believe yen rise is sharp
TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Bank of Japan governor Masaru Hayami said he
does not think the recent rise in the yen is too sharp, despite
concerns expressed by Finance Minister Masajuro Shiokawa.
"The yen has just returned to levels seen in December last year
when it started its decline against the dollar," Hayami told reporters
at the prime minister's official residence.
"I don't think the yen's rise is too sharp. The level should be
determined by the market," he said, when asked about the apparent
differing views on the issue between the central bank and the finance
ministry.
