BRUSSELS (AFX) - The euro zone's December retail sales volume fell
0.6 pct from November but was up 0.4 pct year-on-year, the EU
statistics office Eurostat said.
In the EU, retail sales fell 0.4 pct in December from November and
were up 1.5 pct year-on-year.
The annual retail trade index for 2001 was up 1.3 pct in the euro
zone and up 2.2 pct in the EU, it added.
Compared with November, December retail sales of food, drinks and
tobacco were unchanged in the euro zone; non-food products were down
1.1 pct, including textiles, clothing and footwear down 0.8 pct,
household goods down 0.6 pct, books, newspapers and other specialised
store sales down 0.4 pct, mail orders down 1.5 pct and sales from
non-specialised stores down 8.6 pct.
Year-on-year, December retail sales of food, drinks and tobacco in
the euro zone rose 1.2 pct; non-food products were down 0.8 pct,
including textiles, clothing and footwear up 0.6 pct, household goods
down 0.7 pct, books, newspapers and other specialised store sales down
0.7 pct, mail orders down 0.9 pct and sales from non-specialised stores
down 6.3 pct, it added.
