TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Household spending in December fell 6.6 pct
year-on-year following a 0.9 pct rise in November, the Ministry of
Public Management, Home Affairs and Telecommunications said.
Outlays on education registered the biggest fall of 15.0 pct
year-on-year, followed by housing with a 14.5 pct decline and
transportation and telecommunications with a 10.6 pct decline.
In calendar 2001, household spending by wage earners declined by
1.8 pct, the ninth straight annual fall, following a 0.9 pct dip in the
previous year.
