27 February 2002, 10:28 German Q4 final GDP down 0.3 pct from Q3
WIESBADEN, Germany (AFX) - German GDP fell 0.3 pct in the fourth
quarter of 2001 from the third quarter, according to final data from
the federal statistics office.
Economists polled by AFX News forecast a 0.3 pct quarter-on-quarter
decline.
After a 0.2 pct decline in GDP in the third quarter, this means
Germany is technically in recession.
German GDP in the fourth quarter fell by 0.1 pct compared to the
fourth quarter a year earlier. Economists had forecast year-on-year
stagnant growth.
The statistics office said that the German economy grew by 0.6 pct
in 2001 compared with a rise of 3.0 pct in 2000, confirming data given
in January.
