18 February 2002, 11:30 US Shares Sink On Accounting Jitters, Data
New SEC investigations and a report of accounting trouble at IBM deepened the
market's accounting troubles Friday, causing US shares decline. The S&P
500 closed at 1104.18, down 12.30 or 1.10% from the previous close. The
Nasdaq Composite was off 38.17, or 2.07%, at 1805.20. The Dow
Industrials retreated further from 10,000, down 98.95 at 9903.04.
Volumes were once again light, this time ahead of the long Presidents'
weekend. Despite today's and Thursday's losses, most averages were
either even or slightly higher for the week. Among the loosers, IBM fell
after the New York Times said the company fudged accounting for an
acquisition last year in order to boost its numbers. The weak University
of Michigan sentiment survey also weighed on priced.
