15 February 2002, 12:31 U.S. shares disappeared Thursday
Modest gains for U.S. shares disappeared Thursday afternoon in
what will be the fifth light volume session in a row, with the Dow
Industrials being the only index to hold on to gains at the closing. The
Dow Industrials closed at 10001.99, up 12.32 or 0.12%, but down from its
day's high of 10052.29. The S&P 500 was down 2.03 at 1116.47, and the
Nasdaq Composite ended at 1843.37, 12.04 points or 0.18% below the
previous close. A second straight decline in weekly jobless claims
raised hopes that the rate of employment losses will begin to slow
boosting shares at the opening. But dealers said the rally proved weak,
opening the way for profit-taking in afternoon trade.
