14 February 2002, 16:41 US weekly jobless claims down 8,000 to 373,000
WASHINGTON (AFX) - Initial claims for regular state unemployment
benefits fell 8,000 to a seasonally adjusted 373,000 for the week ended
Feb 9 from the previous week, the Labor Department said.
The level of jobless claims was in line with the consensus forecast
of Wall Street economists.
Jobless claims for the week ended Feb 2 fell a revised 9,000 to
381,000, compared with the initial estimate of a 30,000 rise to
390,000.
The four-week moving average for initial jobless claims fell 5,500
to 376,000. This is the lowest four-week moving average since Aug 11,
before the September terrorist attacks.
On an unadjusted basis, claims fell 7,232 to 438,703. There were
396,750 claims in the comparable week last year.
For the week ended Feb 2, the level of continuing jobless claims
was 3.43 mln. Continuing claims includes individuals who have already
filed a jobless claim, and are still drawing unemployment benefit.
The four-week moving average for continuing claims fell to 3.42
mln, the lowest level since Sept 29.
