11 February 2002, 13:20  UK support for euro entry 42 pct; 53 pct against - MORI poll

LONDON (AFX) - Some 42 pct of UK voters now support euro entry, while 53 pct are opposed to joining the euro, according to an opinion poll by MORI for independent analyst Graham Bishop. MORI surveyed 1,009 people between Feb 1 and 3 for the poll. In the last MORI poll for Bishop, conducted after the UK general election in June, 35 pct supported euro membership while 55 pct were against. Bishop said some 69 pct of voters now expect the UK to have adopted the euro by 2005, while 85 pct think it will have joined by 2010. A number of polls have recently shown a softening in UK opposition to euro entry, but an ICM poll for the anti-euro campaign No last week showed 60 pct against euro entry and only 27 pct in favour.
