11 February 2002, 12:34 UK's Brown to reject calls to rein back public spending - report
LONDON (AFX) - The chancellor, Gordon Brown, will tomorrow signal
the government's determination to put public services ahead of an early
dash for membership of the single currency, with a point-blank refusal
to accept European Commission calls to cut 10 bln stg of spending on
hospitals, schools and transport, the Guardian said without citing
sources.
Amid growing disquiet among countries inside the eurozone over the
way Brussels is attempting to impose budgetary discipline, the
chancellor will tell a meeting of EU finance ministers that the
government has no intentions of scrapping plans to borrow for
investment in Britain's infrastructure, the paper added.
