9 January 2002, 10:23  U.S. shares ended mixed Tuesday

in active volume reflecting a batch of conflicting corporate results and outlooks. The Dow Industrials fell 46.50 to 10150.55 while the Nasdaq Composite rose 18.64 to 2055.74. The S&P 500 edged down 4.17% to 1160.71. First the bad news, aluminum leader Alcoa fell after posting a sharper-than-expected quarterly loss due to weak prices and weak demand, but more dramatic were losses in PC maker Gateway.
