24 January 2002, 16:33  US weekly jobless claims down 15,000 to 376,000

WASHINGTON (AFX) - Initial claims for regular state unemployment benefits fell 15,000 to a seasonally adjusted 376,000 for the week ended Jan 19, from a revised 391,000 in the previous week, the Labor Department said. This is the lowest level of initial claims since the week ended July 28, 2001. Jobless claims for the week ended Jan 12 were revised to a fall of 8,000 to 391,000 from the initial estimate of a drop of 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 384,000. The drop in claims was unexpected. The consensus forecast of Wall Street economists was for jobless claims to rise 19,000 to 403,000. The four-week moving average for initial jobless claims fell 8,750 to 404,250. On an unadjusted basis, jobless claims fell 208,683 to 582,909. There were 399,254 claims in the comparable week of 2001. For the week ended Jan 12, the advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 pct, unchanged from last week. The number of unemployed workers filing continuing claims fell by 54,000 to 3.46 mln. Continuing claims include workers who have already filed an initial jobless claim, and are now drawing unemployment benefits.
