Japan's December customs cleared trade surplus was down a reported 18.4% on year, the 18th consecutive on-year fall. The overall 2001 customs cleared trade surplus was down 33.8% on year. According to a spokesman for the Ministry of Finance, the 2001 trade surplus fall was the largest since 1970.
