The Dow Industrials closed firmly over 10,000, up 52.72 at 10088.07 although that index had been up twice as much earlier in the afternoon. The Nasdaq Composite was up 16.22 at the close, remaining below 2000, at 1960.70. The Dow ended last year at 10789 while the Nasdaq was at 2471. Despite the day's gains, dealers said activity was quiet. Light sessions are expected Thursday and Friday also, as little business before year-end is left to be done.
