24 December 2001, 11:13 U.S. stocks stayed firm through the day Friday
supported by portfolio window dressing and a favorable consumer confidence reading. Dealers believe the market's upward bias going into year-end is being
driven by quarter-end portfolio buying, which is more and more
outweighing tax-loss selling. The Dow industrials ended up 50.16 points
at 10035.34 while the Nasdaq composite rose 27.79 points to 1945.83, a
gain of 1.4%. The S&P 500 rose 4.96 to 1144.89.
