BRUSSELS (AFX) - The European Commission said only the smallest companies still appear unprepared to carry out accounting in euros and to deal with the arrival of euro notes and coins on Jan 1. Monetary affairs spokesman Gerassimos Thomas said it is now up to local chambers of commerce and trade associations to put pressure on their members to speed up preparations in the last month and a half. He said it seems that that one out of five small and medium-sized enterprises plan to be ready only after Jan 1 2002. This willl not create problems "if it's a very small enterprise of one or two people, writing their accounts by hand,", but "if they rely on software for their books, they had better prepare before Jan 1," he said.
