[FWN] Euroshares slump as American Airlines jet crashes near Kennedy airport
LONDON (FWN) - European markets slumped in midafternoon trade as news that an
American Airlines jet has crashed near JFK airport in New York, sparking fears
of another terrorist attack on the US, dealers said.
By 2.42 pm, the Dow Jones Stoxx 50 was down 84.53 points at 3,559.4, while
the Dow Jones Stoxx index lost 7.11 points at 295.04.
So far, details of the crash are sketchy.
However, American Airlines are reported to have confirmed that the Airbus
jet was inbound into JFK airport.
Insurance and airline stocks -- as on Sept 11 -- bore the brunt of the
market markdown, with Axa one of the worst performing stocks in Europe.
However, traders said there has -- so far -- been no panic selling as
investors await more details of the crash. The hope is that the crash was just
an accident, rather than anything more sinister -- though with the events of
Sept 11 still at the forefront of the market's mind, there is a real concern
that this may be the start of another terrorist attack on the US.
