TOKYO, Oct. 9 (Kyodo) - The final figure for general-account
budget requests from government ministries and agencies for the
next fiscal year totaled 85,702.3 billion yen, the Finance Ministry
said in a report presented to the cabinet Tuesday.
The amount of budget requests for fiscal 2002 beginning next
April 1 represents a 3.7% increase from the initial budget for the
current fiscal year, the ministry said.
The ministry reported to the cabinet Sept. 11 that
general-account budget requests amounted to 84,899.2 billion yen.
But the ministry continued to accept requests until the end of
September for seven priority projects, which totaled 803.1 billion
yen, bringing the final figure to over 85 trillion yen.
The seven priority sectors are the environment, the aging
population, urban development, regional revitalization, science and
technology, human resources development, and information
technology.
These are the areas chosen by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi
under his structural reform programs.
Requests for general expenditures, or policy-related outlays,
totaled 47,834.4 billion yen, down 1.7% from those in the initial
budget for the current fiscal year.
