30 October 2001, 10:09 Shiokawa hints at currency intervention
TOKYO - Finance Minister Masajuro Shiokawa suggested Tuesday
that Japan's monetary authorities will intervene in the currency
markets if the yen strengthens despite Japan's weak economic
fundamentals.
"It is necessary to closely monitor whether the exchange rate
reflects Japan's economic fundamentals," Shiokawa told a regular
press conference.
