26 October 2001, 09:37  Japan's posts 1.65 bil. yen trade deficit in early Oct.

TOKYO, Oct. 26 (Kyodo) - (EDS: ADDING MORE INFO) Japan posted a customs-cleared trade deficit of 1.65 billion yen in the first 10 days of October, turning around from a surplus of 139.79 billion yen a year earlier, the Finance Ministry said Friday in a preliminary report. A trade deficit for the first 10 days of the month was last posted in July. Exports fell 4.8% to 1,247.74 billion yen, while imports rose 6.7% to 1,249.40 billion yen, it said. The latest trade data were closely watched by economists as they could provide a clue as to how the Sept. terror attacks in the United States would affect trade between the world's biggest and second-biggest economies.
