23 October 2001, 09:04 LDP's Kyuma - Party policy members concerned over existing extra-budget plan
TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - The ruling Liberal Democratic Party's acting
policy chief Fumio Kyuma said most members of the party's policy board
are unhappy over the current supplementary-budget plan in the face of
increased economic uncertainty.
"The conclusion of today's meeting was that we are not responsible
for the government's action on structural reforms, including the
supplementary budget," Kyuma told reporters after a party gathering to
discuss reform plans.
"The government should announce this fiscal year's economic growth
will not be positive so the government and the party can make a proper
judgement on what measures will be needed for the economy," he said.
Kyuma has previously argued, along with other senior party members,
that the government needs to boost fiscal spending, rather than setting
limits on it, to assist the flagging economy.
