2 October 2001, 14:18 Euro zone Sept economic sentiment index 100.1, unchanged vs Aug
BRUSSELS (AFX) - The economic sentiment indicator in the euro zone
was 100.1 in September, unchanged from August, the European Commission
said.
Consumer confidence in September fell to -9 in September from -8 in
August and -6 in July, while industrial confidence dropped to -11 from
-10 and -9 respectively, the commission said.
Construction confidence rose to -5 from -8 in August and -7 in
July.
Retail confidence, at -6, was higher than in -8 in August but lower
than -4 in July.
The Commission noted that a very high percentage of responses to
the survey came in before the terrorist attacks against the US.
"Only next month, when we publish October's results, will it be
possible to assess the effect of the terrorist attacks on the opinions
of consumers and managers," it said.
The Commission has revised its ccalculation of the economic
sentiment indicator, incorporating the retail trade confidence
indicator rather than the share price index.
With the aim of making the indicator more forward-looking, the
Commission has also removed a question about the financial situation of
households over the past 12 months.
