2 October 2001, 10:52 U.S. share prices were little changed Monday
as investors awaited the unfolding effects of the September 11 attack. The Dow Industrials
held on to last week's 7.4% gain, inching 12.60 lower to 8834.96. The
Nasdaq Composite was weaker, falling 20.88 to 1477.92. Volumes were the
lightest since the market reopened on Sept 17. Dealers said economic
data had little effect on the market. The National Association of
Purchasing Management's report for September showed surprising firmness
but data within the report was not broken down by date of response,
providing no clue to the effect of the Sept 11 attack. Also helping
nerves was a snap-back in Tokyo, where the Nikkei reversed sharp losses
to end 2% higher.//MarketNews
