16 October 2001, 14:01  Euro zone Q2 construction index down 1.4 pct from Q1, down 2.7 pct yr-on-yr

BRUSSELS (AFX) - Euro zone production in the construction sector fell 1.4 pct in the second quarter from the previous quarter, and was down 2.7 pct from a year earlier, the EU statistical office Eurostat said. In the EU 15, the construction index fell by 0.6 pct from the first quarter, and fell 2.0 pct year-on-year, it said. The construction index is a new euro-indicator published by Eurostat which shows the evolution of output in the construction sector In the euro zone, building activity fell by 0.9 pct in the second quarter from the first, and by 3.7 pct from a year earlier, it said. The civil engineering index fell 0.7 pct quarter-on-quarter, and 1.9 pct year-on-year, it said. In the EU 15, building activity fell 0.8 pct from the first quarter and 3.1 pct year-on-year, while civil engineering was down 0.5 pct from the first quarter, and 0.1 pct from a year earlier, it said. On a quarterly basis, the highest falls in total construction were seen in Germany, down 5.4 pct, Austria, down 3.7 pct, and Finland, down 3.3 pct. The UK, up 2.7 pct, Luxembourg, up 2.1 pct, and Spain, up 0.1 pct, showed a positive quarterly evolution, it said. On a yearly basis, responses ranged from a fall of 12.3 pct in Germany's total construction index, to a rise of 10.5 pct in Spain, it said.
