16 October 2001, 11:22 U.S. shares drifted quietly Monday
awaiting heavy corporate
profit reports later this week and contained by the economic and social
uncertainty of the ongoing Afghan war and anthrax scare. The Dow
Industrials rose 3.46 to 9347.62, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 7.09
to 1696.31. Volumes were very light. Despite the market's tepid
performance Monday, dealers called the session a success given last
week's strong gains that included a 2.4 percent rise in the Dow. Many
expect the market, now close to pre-attack levels, to give back recent
gains with or without bad news.
