The S&P 500 ended down 5.78 at 1091.65, only fractionally under its Sept. 10 close. The Nasdaq Composite did better on the session, benefiting from strength among chip equipment makers. The index rose 1.93 to 1703.40, just above its Sept 10 close of 1703.40.
