12 October 2001, 10:02  Finance Minister Shiokawa calls for weaker yen

TOKYO, Oct. 12 (Kyodo) - Finance Minister Masajuro Shiokawa called Friday for a further depreciation in the value of the yen against other major currencies. He made the remark at the House of Representatives Committee on Financial Affairs. Shiokawa suggested that the Bank of Japan stand by to step into the market to shore up the dollar, which had taken a blow from the Sept. 11 terror attacks. The dollar traded at 121.27-30 yen at noon, down from 121.45-55 yen in late New York trading Thursday.
